POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Environment Artist helps direct a team of Artists under the same discipline to create visually stunning and gameplay friendly environments for a current-gen title (PS3 / Xbox360).

The ideal candidate has intimate knowledge of technical and artistic criteria that affect the game’s environment asset pipeline – this may involve planning for sightlines, world streaming, collision geometry, game design and lighting.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

The Senior Environment Artist reports to the Art Director and the Lead Environment Artist. All Environment Artists and provides support to the Lead Level Designer.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

* Time is divided between 20% artist-management and 80% hands-on production art * Helps Art Director to communicate and ensure consistent art style and quality is carried out by environment artists * Participates in creating pipeline for world construction and identifying any tools that should be developed or upgraded to optimize the environment building workflow which is all reported to the Lead Environment Artist * Helps establish and document all environment-building goals and reasonable guidelines for creating world models, textures, lighting and props * Works with the Lead Environment Artist and Technical Director on defining memory/frame-rate budgets and ensuring its consistency with all world art * Identifies all bottlenecks in the world building pipeline and reports them to the Lead Environment Artist * Available for environment artists to raise concerns or issues

DAILY TASKS

* Works very closely with the Lead Environment Artist on the team * Helps the Lead Environment Artist with scoping and scheduling of environment artists, including freelancers, interns, outsourcing, etc. * Regularly reviews environment scenes created by other Environment Artists for art quality and consistency, efficiency in memory, frame-rate, bugs, etc. * Works closely with Senior Texturer and the Lead Lighter to make sure these two areas work together technically to achieve the appropriate art style * Assists other environment artists in developing their abilities

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS

* 3 years minimum industry experience * Experience in a lead or management role is an asset * High level of recognized artistic achievement * Have had shipped at least 2 titles on current gen platforms * Expert in Maya, Photoshop and other related software * Breadth of artistic styles * Knowledge of architectural styles * Post secondary diploma in 3D and/or fine arts or equivalent * Able to work within a specific style set by Art Director * Strong understanding of technical budgets * Demonstrates understanding of optimization * Able to quickly understand in-house tools and provide feedback on improving pipelines and tool sets * Works in an organized and timely fashion * Excellent sense of scale and composition/framing * Able to work with level designers in creating environments that flow and pace well * Sound understanding of 3D geometry construction and experienced in creating game landscapes, buildings, plant-life, props, etc. * Interest in organizing, training, and mentoring other environment artists
