Systems Specialist

The Systems Operations department is a team of ten people responsible for managing and maintaining the Commission’s computing hardware and software environment. As a Systems Specialist, you will support the Commission’s network, servers, and systems infrastructure and implement changes to improve it. Your responsibilities also include assessing information security threats and responding to them in a timely fashion.

Specifically, you will:
• Identify and correct problems with production systems to meet or exceed established services levels
• Manage software patches for servers and client workstations
• Help maintain and support the Commission’s firewalls, network components, and servers
• Monitor the performance of the network and its components and develop recommendations for regular updates to the Commission’s IT Infrastructure Plan
• Evaluate and recommend changes and upgrades to the network operating environment
• Identify new possible information security risks and manage known risks
• Report to and meet with senior management monthly to review security issues
• Work with Internal Audit to perform and respond to ethical hacks of the Commission’s systems
• Help develop and maintain security-related policies
• Raise the overall awareness of information security within the Commission
• Work with the Manager, Systems Operations to ensure the operational infrastructure can be recovered after significant disasters
• Participate in projects as assigned by the Manager, Systems Operations
• Develop business cases and high-level project plans for infrastructure projects
• Provide technical cross-training as needed to ensure no single points of expertise exist within the team

Qualifications
• Technical diploma or university degree in computer science or management information systems
• Minimum of five years network and systems security experience
• Experience with HP or Dell servers, Windows 2003, Active Directory, Group Policy, VMware, OpenText Livelink ECM (previously Hummingbird DM), IIS, Webtrends, Network Appliance NAS, Nortel switches, and Check Point firewalls preferred
• Excellent communication, troubleshooting, problem resolution, and organizational skills
• A good understanding of ITIL concepts and processes would be beneficial, especially experience using a formal problem and change management system
• Professional designation (such as ISP, CCSA, or MCSE) would be an asset
• The ideal candidate will either possess the CISSP designation or be willing to complete it within the first year of employment
