Our Engineering team is looking for a Photonics Engineer to work with the product and program managers and the engineering team to turn market requirement specifications into product designs. You will work on challenging assignments in an exciting, emerging high-growth segment of the solid state lighting market and will apply your Photonics skills to help commercialize state-of-the-art technologies. As key members of the team, you will produce system level models as well as test and verification systems.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop and improve robust instrumentation & manufacturing systems.
• Develop working models of system level behaviour. This includes maintaining existing models and developing new models to ensure the system is properly understood and meets its specification. Correlating the modeled results with experimental data is also required.
• Develop optical control systems. In particular, this means using various dynamic input parameters to control the final output intensity and colour of the system.
• Develop optical calibration systems. This includes determining which parameters need to be measured at calibration for the control system to work properly, and developing systems to measure those parameters.
• Work with product and program managers and the product development team to convert market requirement specifications into product designs.
• Create design specifications for SSL products.
• Research and select materials and identify capable suppliers and vendors to purchase and expedite the delivery of key optical and Photonics components for use in products and prototypes.
• Lead and participate in design reviews.
• Investigate product non-conformances and identifying root causes.
• Create product test and validation plans while maintaining realistic and measurable specifications.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE:

• Bachelors or Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or Applied Physics.
• Minimum of 2+ years experience in R&D or manufacturing engineering.
• Excellent optical instrumentation skills – primarily non-imaging spectroscopy, LED/system/lens characterization. Experience with optical calibration required.
• Excellent automated-test system implementation skills.
• Excellent modeling and simulation skills.
• Knowledge of photometry.
• Familiarity with LabVIEW.
• Familiarity with VB and MATLAB.
• Competent measurement, data analysis and statistical techniques
• Excellent disciplined approach to problem solving, adapting to change and working within time constraints.
• Excellent written & verbal communication and technical documentation skills.
• Experience with Zemax, Tracepro and AGI32 would be an asset.
