The Infrastructure Engineering Team is specifically responsible for the provision of a stable, efficient and secure production network and data centre environment.

PURPOSE:

The Software Deployment Engineer is responsible for managing the deployment of software to the MessageLabs global infrastructure.

DIMENSIONS:

The role involves ensuring the operational readiness of software releases through participation in the Quality Assurance process and balancing operational risk with project deadlines through diligence, planning and effective use of automated deployment tools.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Providing input into the planning process; specifically working with the Project Manager and the Operations teams to agree acceptable deployment timescales which balance operational risk with meeting aggressive go-live dates.

2. Managing software deployments to agreed timescales, escalating issues or deviations from the plan to the Project Manager or infrastructure Technical Lead.

3. Continually developing the software deployment process in order to improve repeatability and manageability and reduce risk.

4. Providing recommendations on the development and enhancement of the automated deployment tool which improve efficiency and manageability.

5. Supporting the adoption of automated software deployment across all areas of the infrastructure.

6. Providing expert knowledge and training on the automated deployment tool and software deployment process to other users in the business.

7. Managing the ‘second stage’ process of building new infrastructure, and increasing the efficiency of this process through automation.

8. Providing input into regular deployment activity reports.

9. Supporting existing processes by adhering to them and encouraging others to do likewise, and raising non-compliance issues to the team leader where appropriate.

10. Liaising with senior staff on issues that may affect the operational effectiveness of the infrastructure.

11. Building good working relationships with staff from all areas of the business to achieve best results.

PROFILE OF JOB HOLDER:

Essential

• Minimum three years experience of working within a complex change managed computing environment.
• Excellent practical knowledge of Linux, specifically RedHat 8 and Redhat Enterprise 4 and use of RPM Package Manager.
• Capable of planning and prioritising own workload in a high pressure and time constrained environment.
• Highly self-motivated and capable of working on own initiative as well as within a team.
• Quality focused with excellent attention to detail.
• Familiarity of working within a formal project management framework.
• Proven troubleshooting skills.

Desirable

• Educated to degree standard in a computer related subject.
• Experience of using a software deployment tool, preferably Managesoft Software Deployment Manager.
• Experience of performing basic Cisco device configuration and troubleshooting.
• Experience of working in an ITIL compliant environment.
