The Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) is in search of a new manager for our computing resources. We are looking for someone with a strong HPC background and excellent Linux administration skills, who wants to work with scientists on challenging problems in an academic environment.

ABOUT CITA
The Institute is a world-renowned national centre for advanced cosmic research sited at the University of Toronto, rated as one of the top employers in Canada. Its 7 faculty, 21 postdoctoral fellows, 15 graduate students and over 100 visitors per year, are engaged in leading-edge large-scale simulations and data analysis/mining through a network of advanced massively parallel computer systems. The Computer Facilities Manager position offers a unique opportunity to be fully engaged in enabling this activity.

CITA has pursued HPC since the mid 1990s with several successive generations of hardware. In 2003 we built the “McKenzie” cluster which scored #38 on the top 500 list, still the highest-ever ranking for a Canadian academic computer. In 2007 we replaced it with “Sunnyvale”, a 1,600-core, 10 TFlop cluster. Innovative networking schemes designed in-house were used to significantly boost code performance on both of these clusters. In June 2008 we finished building a 40TB lustre filesystem based on commodity hardware.

Job Description
ABOUT THE POSITION
You will be responsible for acquiring, installing, and operating all of CITA’s computing resources. Since greater computing resources translate directly into scientific results, we’ll be looking to you for innovative ideas to help us get the most bang-for-the-buck out of our machines. This is a hands-on position, but you’ll also oversee a small staff consisting of a Parallel Programmer and co-op student assistant(s). Act as consultant on user software development and conversion, cluster computing, efficient use of resources, and on 3D graphics and visualization. Liaise with vendors, university groups, SciNet.

QUALIFICATIONS
� Education: B.Sc. preferably in Computer Science, Physics or Engineering,
or equivalent practical experience through a degree program in Astronomy
with proven advanced programming skills.
� Experience: Several years of experience with *NIX system programming
and/or *NIX system administration. Solid knowledge of Fortran, C, and C++.
Experience with graphics visualization an asset. 2 years’ proven supervisory
experience.
� Skills: Advanced skills in the *NIX system programming and systems
administration. Well developed skills in Fortran, C, and C++, as well as
with graphics visualization. Must be able to interface with parallel
astrophysical programming needs, including massively parallel system
configuration and programming. Ability to direct activities of computer operations. Managerial skills.

The Licensing Operations Supervisor will be responsible for providing management coverage in absence and in conjunction with the Licensing Manger to assist in training and development of Licensing Operations staff. All in addition to basic responsibility to ensure the customer receives outstanding service by processing all transactions and Contracts accurately in an efficient and timely manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist Manager in management duties
• Maintain day-to-day workflow among department
• Maintain SLA’s and requests through follow-ups with team members
• Departmental reporting on a weekly/mthly basis as required including PPV’s
• Prepare and compose weekly/monthly team progress reports
• Manage delegation of all incoming and outgoing requests
• Respond to all escalation issues accordingly
• Manage, maintain, and monitor MS scorecard
• Provide support as a Second Audit/Back-Up
• Provide support as a Vendor & Sales Key Contact
• Provide training and support to co-workers and assisting in their development
• Project leader in new initiatives and programs including testing new and existing applications prior to deployment
• Assist in identifying problems, suggesting and implementing improvements to current department processes
• Initiate activities, meeting requests, and monthly team meetings to promote interdepartmental visibility, co-operation, communication and cohesion.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum Education – High School Diploma (College or University preferred)
• Strong computer skills including Excel and Access
• Demonstrated customer service skills and experience
• Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Highly motivated and able to work in a high volume demand area.
• Some prior experience in Licensing capacity role.
• Some prior experience in a Senior role.
